Biography
Greg Langford was born and grew up in the 1960s and 1970s in Winder Georgia, where his father owned a Drive Inn Restaruant called the Triangle. His father put Greg, his three brothers, and his only sister to work at the restaurant all at an early age. Having grown up the only red head, and working at The Triangle greatly influenced Greg’s family life. Working for tips, provided a source of income for Greg and his siblings, but it also provided a social climate most children don’t experience. The Triangle was a local hang out for all the high school kids who enjoyed picking on the red headed curb hop, and taught Greg to be a smart aleck from an early age.
At age 12 Greg’s sister was killed in a DUI car wreck while at college, and this dramatically changed the projection of Greg’s family. His oldest brother who was his sister’s best friend began selling drugs. Greg’s middle brother began doing the drugs that his older brother was selling. Greg had the good fortune of outside influences in Scouting and in sports who encouraged him to be a good citizen, while Greg’s youngest brother could only get attention by getting into more trouble than the rest of his siblings. This produced a resume of disaster for Greg and his brothers that includes; 24 DUIs, 14 totaled out vehicles, 16 overdoses, and 14 trips to rehab, among other notorious feats.
While his brothers were racking up these accomplishments, Greg went on to become the captain of his state track champion team, an Eagle Scout, and a graduate of economics at the University of Georgia. He then went on to a career in successful career in banking.
All this ended in 1996 with the death of Greg’s father, the following year his younger brother committed suicide. Two weeks later, Greg’s mother passed away from a broken heart. One year after that Greg’s oldest brother committed suicide, and Greg went to rehab. Once released from rehab, the insanity continued with the suicides of Greg’s best friend and a first cousin. Soon after, Gregs’ sister-in-law was murdered, and another sister in law died in a car wreck.

Greg recently spoke at one of our events, and his presentation made a lasting impression on everyone there. He spoke openly of his family’s challenges with mental illness, addiction, and suicide in a way that touched us all. What’s amazing about his talk was that he spoke on these subjects using humor in a way that really humanized his experience, and showed his ability to overcome. After his speech, I was one of many that approached Greg and shared my family’s story and struggles. Greg left us all feeling less ashamed about our family’s struggles, and with solid action items we could take with us in our battles. I would highly recommend Greg to any group wishing to start an open dialogue on these difficult subjects.

I’ve shared the comedy stage with Greg Langford AKA Uncle G for over 10 years, and he’s never impressed me more than when we recently spoke together at a mental health event. While I knew of his family’s struggles with addiction, mental illness, and suicide, it never hit home with me until I heard him tell his story in person. I was taken aback by how much tragedy his family faced and how he dealt with it with humor and resilience. Greg’s message that “ once you can joke about a situation, you move from victim to survivor” really struck home with me. His ability to use humor as a bridge to confront uncomfortable topics is amazing. What most impressed me was that he left the audience with a list of action items, and resources to help them with their own battles.
